These terms, anabolic, anti-catabolic, anti-proteolytic, and protein-sparing, describe the protein status in muscle.
The bodybuilding community tends to define anabolic compounds as those that increase the transport of amino acids into muscles and increase protein synthesis.

Ajuga turkestanica and myostatin: Another study on the anabolic effects of Ajuga turkestanica was published in Oriental Medicine in 2012.
Researchers were working at PoliNat.
PoliNat is a Spanish company that sells plant-based bioactive extracts, including Ajuga turkestanica extract.
Researchers observed that muscle cells produced less myostatin at 1 micromolar concentrations of Ajuga turkestanica ecdysteroid.
The researchers repeated this experiment, this time exposing the muscle cells to 1 micromolar of the anabolic agent.
And somehow, ecdysteroids turned out to be more effective as myostatin inhibitors than anabolic agents.
The potential for any substance to increase protein synthesis within muscle while bypassing the side effects common to steroidal drugs makes it an attractive approach for athletes.
The objective of their study was to initially test a proprietary extract of Ajuga turkestanica (ATE), rich in ecdysteroids, for early signs of efficacy (gains/mass preservation) and safety (lack of androgenic activity).
In the past, testosterone and other androgenic steroid drugs were used to increase or maintain muscle mass.
Because these drugs act through the androgen receptor, they show significant side effects that must be carefully evaluated before initiating treatment.
The anabolic effects of ecdysteroids are related to acceleration of translocation processes rather than induction of new RNA synthesis.
Ecdysteroids do not act as classical steroids through modulation of cytoplasmic receptors and gene transcription activity.
Ecdysteroids exhibit important structural differences from anabolic-androgenic steroid hormones, which may explain the different mechanisms of ecdysteroid anabolic action.
Chemical properties: The main constituents of the whole plant are ecdysteroids (5-beta-cholest-6-on-7-ene derivatives) and flavonoids.
Additionally, polyacetylenes and triterpenes have been isolated from other parts of the plant (Girault et al. 1984, Szendrei et al. 1984, Varga et al. 1986, 1990). Of the isolated compounds, only 20-hydroxyecdysone and turkesterone are currently thought to play a role in the plant's actions (Syrov and Kurmukov 1976).
The major flavonoids are 6-methoxy-kaempferol, patuletin, isorhamnetin-glycoside, and quercetin-5-glycoside. All leaf and root samples contained 20-hydroxyecdysone, the main component of Rhaponticum carthamoides.
The range of 20-hydroxyecdysone in the roots is 0.7% to 2.0%, which is higher than that in the leaves.
According to experimentally obtained quantitative and qualitative data, the optimal time for harvesting the roots of Rhaponticum carthamoides is the end of August, when the 20-hydroxyecdysone content is highest.
Research on the effects of Rhaponticum carthamoides has been conducted over the past 60 years on whole plant extracts, the main active compounds of which are 20-Hydroxyecdysone and turkesterone.
Ingested ecdysteroids withstand exposure to gastric acid and are rapidly absorbed into the intestinal bloodstream.
Secretion occurs primarily through the liver.
More recent studies have identified eight ecdysteroids and demonstrated synergistic effects when combined (Baltaev and Abubakirov 1987; Gorovits et al. 1974; 1977). When using a powdered extract of Rhaponticum carthamoides, it is important to ensure that it is standardized to 20-Hydroxyecdysterone.
When properly extracted, Rhaponticum carthamoides should have 2 parts 20-Hydroxyecdysterone for every 1 part total ecdysone or ecdysteroid.
Rhaponticum carthamoides contains several other biologically active compounds that are thought to act in concert with ecdysteroids to impart its unique tonic qualities (Azizov and Seifulla 1998). It is rich in flavonoids, sesquiterpene lactones, and polyines (Opletal et al. 1997).
Therapeutic activity: In 1961, the liquid extract of Rhaponticum carthamoides (1:1) was officially recognized and included in the Soviet Pharmacopoeia as a natural remedy for relieving fatigue, increasing physical and mental productivity, and shortening recovery time after illness.
Over the years, RCE has been reported to have numerous pharmacological effects in humans (Kokoska et al. 2002; Kolmakova and Kutolina 1966).
Athlete Enhancement and Recovery, Including Metabolism: A study conducted at the State Institute of Sports in Moscow, Russia, found that trained athletes using RCE improved endurance, speed, recovery, and other physiological parameters.
Based on in-depth research, Russian scientists, researchers, and trainers recommend RCE in many areas of the game.
Because RCE actively influences metabolic processes, it is effective in preventing and eliminating exercise-related myocardial tension.
Laboratory studies have demonstrated the anabolic effects of RCE, including its ability to increase body weight by improving the muscle-to-fat ratio, increase hemoglobin and red blood cell counts, increase total blood protein levels, and reduce uric acid accumulation.
The proven end result of this nutrient is that the body's muscle-building processes outpace muscle breakdown, leading to greater physical fitness, endurance, and performance (Saratikov 1949; Cherdyntsev 1970; Salnik 1970; Demin et al. 1976; Syrov and Kurmokov 1976; Gerasyuta and Koval 1981a; Lupandin 1991; Seifulla et al. 1993; Gadzhieva et al. 1995; Logvinov and Pugachenko 2001).
During intense muscle exercise, RCE maintains stable levels of glycogen and phosphate in skeletal muscle, increasing blood supply to the muscles and brain.
This shortens the recovery time after prolonged muscle activity, which is believed to normalize cardiovascular parameters (Cherdyntsev 1970; Salnik 1970). In 1976, Demin et al. reported significant increases in physical performance—strength, endurance, and coordination—in elite athletes taking RCE.
A 1993 study by Seifula et al. demonstrated that RCE combined with carnitine increases maximal running speed and endurance (Demin et al. 1976; Seifula et al. 1993). A 1984 study by V. Petkov et al. demonstrated that RCE significantly increases the working capacity of fatigued skeletal muscles and increases the concentrations of glycogen, ATP, and phosphocreatine (Petkov et al. 1984). Intense physical activity in top athletes leads to increased blood coagulation, which can lead to muscle pain and often injury.
A comparative study was conducted using a mixture of extracts of Acanthopanax and RCE combined with vitamins.
A 20-day study found that intense training resulted in a decrease in blood clotting and blood clotting factors.
Treatment with this novel combination of nutritional supplements significantly reduces the risk of clotting in athletes, which is accompanied by improved recovery after intense exercise and increased athletic performance (Azizov 1997).
In another study conducted with athletes, the same "polyadaptogens" were found to provide significant antioxidant effects (Azizov and Seifulla 1998). Research by the Russian State Institute of Sports Research has shown that RCE and several RCE-based products have broad anabolic properties.
The renowned sports pharmacologist SN Portugalov, together with his colleagues, demonstrated that RCE has significant anabolic properties and that when used by top athletes (middle and long distance runners), it prevents the loss of lean muscle tissue during rigorous training to enhance their performance (Pourtugalov et al. 1994; Gadzhieva et al. 1995).
In one study, a natural protein substance known to have a beneficial effect on muscle-to-fat ratio as well as exercise performance among athletes was combined with RCE and compared to a placebo (Lupandin 1991).
A combined study found that taking RCE along with supplemental protein was optimal for maximizing athletic performance.
Among athletes who consumed only protein, only a small increase in muscle mass was observed.
Those who took the placebo lost some lean muscle mass, while those who took protein and RCE experienced a 6-7% increase in lean muscle mass, along with a nearly 10% fat loss. There were no differences in hormonal parameters in those who took RCE during the study period.
Increased protein synthesis: Administration of ecdysterone (0.5 mg/100 g) from RCE to rats for 7 days was accompanied by accelerated body weight gain and increased weights of the liver, heart, and kidney.
Total protein levels in these organs also increased (Seifulla et al. 1993). A study conducted at seven hospitals in Moscow, Kyiv, and Leningrad found that RCE significantly improved patients' physical and mental well-being; it also increased body weight and exercise capacity in conditions of malnutrition due to impaired protein synthesis.
Its anabolic properties lead to normalization of body weight without any negative effects on the function of the adrenal cortex or endocrine glands.
RCE is particularly helpful in preventing the catabolic state seen in stressful situations.
Components of this plant have demonstrated anabolic properties in clinical trials. Patients who took RCE for three weeks under conditions of daily aerobic and anaerobic training lost fat and gained muscle mass (Syrov et al. 1997).
Pharmacology: Rhaponticum carthamoides significantly increases the capacity of fatigued skeletal muscles, contributing to a lesser utilization of carbohydrates and a promotion of new synthesis of glycogen and high-energy phosphorus compounds (Salnik 1967).
When given to humans, its extracts are said to increase endurance, reflexes, and concentration, with athletes tiring more slowly and recovering more quickly (Saratikov 1966).
The rhizomes and roots of Rhaponticum carthamoides are officially recorded in the Russian Pharmacopoeia.
Some of the crude ecdysteroids and liquid extracts obtained from the root are used in the production of Ecdysten tablets, which are used in official medicine in Russia.
Additionally, other preparations made from these are commercially available in several countries.
Mechanism of Action: Unlike anabolic-androgenic steroids, which exert their effects hormonally, 20-EC and turkesterone appear to have several different mechanisms of action.
Simply put, it appears to act as a powerful “nutraceutical” compound, stimulating increased output, improved recovery, and increased strength and stamina in athletes during intense physical activity.
In other words, this appears to enhance the “super training” effect.
The most interesting part about RCE is that despite its broad biological activity, the benefits it provides appear to occur without causing androgenic (body hair, male pattern baldness, etc.) or non-gonadotropic (testicular shrinkage) side effects.
Given that 20-EC does not bind to androgen or estrogen receptors, this is not entirely unexpected.
Therefore, men can use it without the risk of developing gynecomastia, and women can use it without the risk of masculinization. The difference in the properties of Rhaponticum extract is enormous!
In fact, many people have tried ecdysterone products in the past and they did not work well.
Today, genuine Rhaponticum extracts containing turkesterone and 20-Hydroxyecdysterone generally show sales among regular buyers.
This means that it works.
